The same trail. A completely different experience.

Explorer Crew helps you make that shift through four connected naturalist skills.

Build the foundations of an everyday naturalist

Four connected skills transform scattered observations into a deeper understanding of the natural world.

Notice the Signs

Recognize tracks, trails, sounds, feeding evidence, feathers, disturbed soil, and the clues animals leave behind.

Read the Landscape

Understand how food, water, shelter, movement routes, habitat, and season influence wildlife activity.

Understand the Story

Connect individual clues to movement, feeding, behaviour, communication, and changing conditions.

Build the Practice

Strengthen your skills through field challenges, predictions, notes, reflection, and ethical observation.

You notice tracks beside a muddy crossing.

You read the habitat and see water, cover, and a possible travel corridor.

You interpret the direction and spacing of the tracks.

You record what you found and return later to test your prediction.

Build Your Naturalist Foundation

The first 12 weeks introduce the core skills of an everyday naturalist. Once you complete them, Explorer Crew continues with new challenges, community discoveries, seasonal activities, discussions, resources, and opportunities to deepen your practice.

Weeks 1 – 4

Discover the Signs

Tracks, movement routes, feeding evidence, sound, and stillness.

Weeks 5 – 8

Understand the Landscape

Habitat, behaviour, birds as messengers, and seasonal change.

Weeks 9 – 12

Think Like a Naturalist

Predictions, field notes, ethical watching, and your first field study.

One focused lesson and one practical field challenge each week.

Learn one skill. Take it outside.

Learn

Discover one practical nature skill through a clear, approachable lesson.

Practise

Use a simple method that helps you know what to look for.

Explore

Take the skill outside with a focused Explorer Challenge.

Reflect

Record what you noticed, what surprised you, and what questions remain.

Share

Bring your discoveries into the community and learn from what others find.

Explore independently. Grow together.

The first 12 weeks give you a strong foundation. The Explorer Crew community gives you a place to keep using it.

Share observations, ask questions, join fresh challenges, and learn from members exploring different habitats. As seasons change and new discoveries emerge, Explorer Crew gives you new reasons to step outside and look closer.

  • Share photographs, field notes, and wildlife clues.
  • Learn through the discoveries of other members.
  • Join seasonal prompts and community challenges.
  • Help shape future resources and events.

Explorer Crew is not something you simply complete. It is a place to keep exploring.

Created by a lifelong wildlife explorer

Explorer Crew was created by Graeme Hull, a zoologist, wildlife photographer, and founder of Biome Media.

From childhood encounters with wildlife in South Africa to wildlife photography and multi-species fieldwork in Canada, curiosity has shaped the way he experiences nature. Explorer Crew brings those lessons together in a practical approach anyone can begin using close to home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Explorer Crew a course or a membership?

Explorer Crew is an ongoing monthly membership.

Your first 12 weeks provide a guided foundation in nature observation, helping you build the core skills of an everyday naturalist. After that, you can continue practising, sharing discoveries, joining community activities, and exploring new resources as Explorer Crew grows.

The 12-week journey is where you begin, not where Explorer Crew ends.

What happens after the first 12 weeks?

Once you complete the foundational journey, you remain part of the Explorer Crew community for as long as your membership stays active.

You can continue sharing observations, asking questions, revisiting lessons, joining new challenges, and learning from members exploring different habitats.

We also plan to expand Explorer Crew with fresh resources, seasonal activities, expert Q&As, guest sessions, and special community events.

Do I need any previous experience?

No. Explorer Crew is designed to help beginners build their skills one step at a time.

You do not need to recognize tracks, identify birds, understand scientific terminology, or consider yourself an experienced outdoorsperson.

You only need curiosity and a willingness to look closer.

Where can I complete the activities?

You do not need access to remote wilderness.

You can practise in neighbourhood parks, gardens, walking trails, shorelines, campgrounds, river pathways, woodlands, and even your own backyard.

Explorer Crew is about learning to notice more wherever you are.

Do I need special equipment?

No expensive equipment is required.

A notebook, phone or camera, suitable outdoor clothing, and basic curiosity will be enough for most Explorer Challenges.

Optional equipment such as binoculars, field guides, or a magnifying glass may enrich your experience, but they are not required.

How much time will I need?

Explorer Crew is designed to fit around ordinary outdoor walks and everyday life.

Each lesson focuses on one practical skill, and the challenges can usually be completed during a short visit outside. You can move through the material at a pace that works for you.

The goal is to build a lasting practice, not create another demanding obligation.

What happens if I fall behind?

Nothing. Explorer Crew is not a race.

Your available lessons remain accessible while your membership is active, so you can return to them whenever your schedule allows.

You can follow the weekly rhythm or move more slowly and spend extra time practising each skill.

Is Explorer Crew mainly about identifying species?

No. Species identification can be useful, but it is only one part of understanding nature.

Explorer Crew focuses on tracks, feeding signs, movement, habitat, sound, behaviour, seasonality, field notes, and the questions that help you interpret what you find.

You do not need a perfect identification to make a meaningful observation.

What can I share in the community?

You can share photographs, tracks, feeding signs, field notes, sounds, behaviours, habitat observations, completed Explorer Challenges, and questions about anything you encounter. Members can share ideas and perspectives, while future expert sessions will give us opportunities to explore selected questions more deeply.

You do not need a rare sighting or a polished answer.

Sometimes the most valuable discussion begins with a simple question: What happened here?

Will experts answer member questions?

We plan to introduce expert Q&As, guest naturalists, and special learning sessions as Explorer Crew grows.

These sessions will explore selected member questions and topics in greater depth. Founding members will also help shape which experts, subjects, and events would be most valuable to the community.

How much does membership cost?

The first 50 members can join at the Founding Member rate of $10 USD per month.

After those 50 places are claimed, Explorer Crew membership will increase to $15 USD per month.

Your Founding Member rate remains locked in for as long as your membership stays continuously active.

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes. Explorer Crew is a month-to-month membership with no long-term commitment or cancellation fee.

You can cancel through your account at any time. After cancelling, you will retain access until the end of your current paid billing period, and you will not be charged again.

Monthly payments are generally non-refundable once processed, except where required by law or where a duplicate charge or technical error has occurred.

What happens to my Founding Member rate if I cancel?

Your $10 Founding Member rate remains active while your membership continues without cancellation.

If you cancel and later decide to return, you may rejoin at the membership price available at that time. Your original Founding Member rate cannot be guaranteed.

If a scheduled payment fails, you will have seven days to update your payment information before your membership and Founding Member rate are considered inactive.
